Effort to revive Galapagos tortoises once thought extinct

Scientists will try to revive two species of giant Galapagos tortoises thought to have been extinct by breeding genetic relatives in captivity, experts leading the effort said. The Galapagos Islands, located 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) off Ecuador's Pacific coast, are famed for the large number of species that have developed there in isolation.

World Heritage meeting opens in Cambodia, Mt. Fuji set to be listed

The UNESCO World Heritage Committee opened its annual session in Phnom Penh on Sunday to determine the listing of new world heritage sites, including Japan's iconic Mt. Fuji. Mt. Fuji would be Japan's 17th World Heritage site, if approved by the 21-member committee under the U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. The meeting is scheduled to run until June 27. The decision on the listing of Mt. Fuji is expected to be announced on June 22 or 23, according to a Cambodian official.

Tourists try to smuggle protected species out of Galapagos Islands

Quito, Jun 14 (EFE).- Ecuadorian authorities arrested seven foreigners after finding a total of 1,313 processed sea cucumbers inside their luggage, the Galapagos National Park Service said Friday. Airport X-ray scanners detected "strange packages" inside the baggage of the seven passengers boarding a flight to mainland Ecuador, the park management said in a statement. The tourists were taken into custody and will faces charges.

"Lonesome George" to go on display in Galapagos

Quito, Jun 11 (EFE).- The body of the giant tortoise known as "Lonesome George," which died a year ago, is being embalmed in the United States, a process after which it will be returned to Ecuador to be exhibited in the Galapagos archipelago. Jorge will thus become a "wake-up call to make people see what can happen to a species if we humans keep destroying our home, the natural world, without realizing what we're doing," Washington Tapia, director of applied research at Galapagos National Park, told Efe.

Chile, Argentina order evacuation around volcano

SANTIAGO/BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) - Chilean and Argentine authorities on Monday declared a red alert and ordered the mandatory evacuation of a 25-km (15.5-mile) radius around the active Copahue volcano, which straddles the border between the two Andean nations. The volcano - located some 500 km (310 miles) south of capital Santiago, between Chile's Bio Bio region and Argentina's Neuquen province - has seen increasing seismic activity in recent weeks but has not erupted, Chilean authorities said.

Evacuation orders in Chile, Argentina over volcano

Authorities in Chile and Argentina on Monday issued a red alert and ordered the evacuation of 3,000 people living near the Copahue volcano near their common border, saying an eruption could be imminent. Chile's interior minister Andres Chadwick said anyone living in a 25-kilometer (15-mile) radius of the volcano had been asked to leave -- a total of more than 2,200 people. Another 800 people were cleared from homes on Argentina's side of the border, according to local officials.

Explosions at Mexico's Popocatepetl volcano produce ash columns

Mexico City, May 25 (EFE).- Scientists recorded two moderate explosions Saturday morning at Mexico's Popocatepetl that sent columns of gas and ash up to 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles) above the crater, the National Disaster Prevention Center, or Cenapred, said. The latest bulletin on this volcano in central Mexico said the first explosion occurred at 6:46 a.m. and the second at 10:00 a.m.
