Dutch couple 'disappears' in Yemen, said kidnapped

A Dutch couple living in Yemen disappeared in Sanaa, police said on Saturday, with press reports saying they had been kidnapped. "The police commissariat in Sanaa learned on Saturday of the disappearance a few days ago of a Dutchman and his wife," a security official said on condition of anonymity. Press reports said the couple, who had not been seen for three days, had been abducted. The Yemeni daily Al-Yemen al-Youm, mouthpiece of former president Ali Abdullah Saleh, reported that "unknown men kidnapped" the couple, without giving further details.

Sanaa aims to organise Yemeni returns from Guantanamo

Foreign Minister Abu Bakr al-Kurbi said Sunday that Yemen is to coordinate with the United States to organise the return of Yemeni detainees from Guantanamo Bay. "We are going to make contact with US authorities to prepare the repatriation of the Yemenis held at Guantanamo," Kurbi said on the defence ministry's website, 26sep.net. He said the Americans were expected to organise the transfer in groups.

A Russian-made Yemeni military jet ploughed into a residential district of the capital Sanaa on Monday killing the pilot, an army official told AFP, and witnesses said it exploded in mid-air before crashing. The Sukhoi crashed into "Al-Asbahi residential district in southern Sanaa," the official said. Witnesses said the plane exploded in the air before crashing and debris from the aircraft scattered across the area, causing light damage to buildings and shattering windows.

Gunmen wound Russian Red Cross worker in Yemen

Gunmen on a motorbike wounded a Red Cross worker from Russia when they opened fire on her vehicle in Yemen's capital on Tuesday, witnesses, medics and sources from the aid group said. "A Russian aid worker was lightly wounded by gunfire" in Sanaa, a medical official told AFP, adding that she was in "good condition". Witnesses in Sanaa said two gunmen on a motorbike had opened fire at the vehicle carrying the woman and her husband.

UN experts probe Iran-linked arms ship in Yemen

UN experts in Yemen on Sunday investigated an Iran-linked arms shipment which authorities intercepted in January, the official Saba news agency reported. The UN team, escorted by army general Nasser al-Taheri, inspected the contents of the ship which Saba said includes surface-to-air missiles, Katyusha rockets, explosives, ammunition and surveillance systems. The Yemeni coastguard, in coordination with the US navy, intercepted the Jihan II in the Arabia Sea and authorities have said the ship carried rockets and explosives that came from Iran. Tehran denies any involvement.

(Death toll rises, quotes) SANAA, Feb 19 (Reuters) - A Yemeni air force plane crashed in the capital Sanaa on Tuesday, killing at least 12 people, security sources said. State news agency Saba said three women and two children were among those killed when the plane, on a training flight, came down in a western residential district. Eleven people were wounded, security sources said.

Yemen military aircraft crashes in Sanaa, kills 9

A Yemeni military aircraft ploughed into a building in a residential neighbourhood of Sanaa on Tuesday killing at least nine people, medics and witnesses said. The pilot was killed when the plane crashed near Change Square in eastern Sanaa, while at least eight civilians died on the ground, the sources said. A military source identified the plane as a Russian-made Sukhoi SU-22 attack aircraft, but was unable to say what caused the crash which he said killed pilot Mohamed Shaker.

The ministry said in a text message that the warplane had been on a training flight when it came down in a western residential district. Pictures of the crash on social media sites showed one body near burning wreckage of the aircraft. Several cars were on fire and debris littered the street.
