Ex-governor of Syrian province charged with corruption

Syrian authorities have charged a former governor of the eastern province of Deir Ezzor with embezzling public funds, the official Ath Thawra newspaper reported on Wednesday. "In the context of government measures to fight corruption, a lawsuit has been filed against Fawaz al-Saleh, the former governor of Deir Ezzor and a number of other governorate council members," the paper said. They stand accused of "misappropriation of public property" and "serious shortcomings" in the distribution of basic goods.

Rocket attack kills Syria photojournalist

A Syrian photojournalist known for his picture of bicyclists on a badly damaged bridge was killed when an army rocket attack erupted while he himself was cycling, a colleague said Monday. Murhaf al-Mohdi, who also went by the pseudonym Abo Shuja, had contributed photographs to AFP. He was cycling back on Saturday from a visit to his parents when regime troops started firing rockets on a neighbourhood of the eastern city of Deir Ezzor, a journalist colleague said. One rocket hit a building nearby, and the impact threw Mohdi and the camera he was holding off his bike.

60 Shiites killed in fighting in Syria

Cairo, Jun 12 (EFE).- At least 60 Shiites, the majority of them militiamen loyal to the regime of Bashar Assad, were killed in combat with rebels in a town in the northeastern Syrian province of Deir ez-Zor, the opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Wednesday. Fighting broke out Tuesday in the town of Hatla, which has a Shiite minority, after pro-government militiamen attacked a nearby rebel position, killing two insurgents and wounding eight others, the group said.

Syria civil servant gunned down in capital

A Syrian civil servant was gunned down in an upscale Damascus neighbourhood, a watchdog group said on Friday, adding that six people, including four children, were killed in shelling on a district of Aleppo. Ali Ballane, public relations director at the ministry of social affairs, was shot by four armed men at the Kanun restaurant in the Mazzeh neighbourhood of the capital on Thursday evening, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. Mazzeh, in the centre-west of the city, is home to a number of embassies, government buildings and intelligence service facilities.
