Football: 70 arrests as Bulgarian football violence flares

Bulgarian police made 70 arrests Saturday after violence flared in the capital Sofia before and after a meeting between the country's two best-supported clubs, Levski and CSKA. Levski won the encounter 2-1 but police had to intervene after hooligans went on the rampage, damaging several buses and trams and throwing stones, injuring one young girl in the process. Police made 20 arrests before the match and then some 40 more inside the ground as searches revealed some fans to be carrying knives and batons.

Newcastle threaten deplorable "fans" with lifetime bans

LONDON (Reuters) - Newcastle United will impose lifetime bans on "so-called fans" who created mayhem in the city centre after the team were beaten by arch-rivals Sunderland in Sunday's Premier League derby, the club said on Monday. A statement on the Newcastle website (www.nufc.co.uk) said the club were "embarrassed and appalled" by the violence that followed the 3-0 home defeat.

Tear gas, stun grenades and knuckle-dusters provided a grim, bloody backdrop as hooliganism returned to haunt Europe's top leagues this weekend. Thousands turn out for Egyptians killed in Port Said clashes

Thousands took to the streets of Egypt's Port Said on Monday for the funeral of three people killed in clashes, in the latest unrest fuelled by death sentences for football fans over deadly riots last year. "The interior ministry (officials) are cowards!" the angry mourners chanted and called on Islamist President Mohamed Morsi to "leave". Six people, including three policemen, were killed and hundreds injured in the overnight fighting after the authorities decided to move prisoners awaiting a verdict over alleged involvement in a deadly football riot last year.

4 Egyptians killed in Port Said clashes: ministry

Four people including two policemen were killed in overnight clashes between police and protesters in Egypt's restive canal city of Port Said, the interior ministry said on Monday. At least 420 people were also injured in the clashes which began on Sunday after authorities decided to move prisoners awaiting a verdict over alleged involvement in a deadly football riot last year. The two policemen died from gunshots to the head and neck, an interior ministry official said.

UPDATE 3-Soccer-Bolivian police investigate boy's death by flare

(Adds background) Feb 21 (Reuters) - Bolivian police opened an investigation on Thursday into the death of a 14-year-old boy from a flare allegedly launched by Corinthians fans during a South American Libertadores Cup match in Oruro. They arrested at least 12 fans of title holders Corinthians of Brazil after Wednesday night's match against home side San Jose and will be interrogating them to try to identify who set off the flare that hit the boy in the eye, killing him almost instantly.

Football: Rioting highlights German football's violent side

Rioting football hooligans have again dragged violence in Germany's Bundesliga back into the spotlight after three separate incidents in the country's top two leagues over the weekend. The worst case was at Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday when around 1,000 away supporters from Nuremberg clashed with police, leaving 19 officers and two stewards with minor injuries. A police car was pelted with stones outside Frankfurt's Commerzbank Arena and a fence around the stadium was destroyed.
