Four dead, 25 trapped after Indonesia mine collapse

Rescuers struggled Wednesday to reach 25 workers trapped underground at a US-owned mine in remote eastern Indonesia after a tunnel caved in, with four others confirmed dead. Beijing, May 12 (EFE).- A gas explosion in a coal mine in the southwestern Chinese province of Sichuan killed at least 27 miners and injured 16, according to local authorities cited by the state-run Xinhua news agency. The accident occurred about 6 a.m. GMT on Saturday in the Taozigou mine near the city of Luzhou, authorities said, adding that an investigation had been opened to determine the cause of the blast. So far, 81 miners have been rescued but 16 of them are injured to varying degrees and are receiving treatment in local hospitals, authorities said.

NE China mine company manager detained over fatal blast

The deputy manager of a mining company in northeast China's Jilin Province has been taken into custody in relation to a Monday coal mine explosion that killed six people, the company said Tuesday. Wang Shengyu, deputy manager of Tonghua Mining (Group) Co., Ltd., has been detained by local police, the company said. The explosion happened around 10 a.m. Monday at the Babao Coal Mine in the city of Baishan. A mine operator saw smoke coming out of the mine at 8 a.m.

China mine blast kills 28: state media

A gas blast in a northeast China coal mine killed 28 people, authorities said Saturday, according to state media, the latest incident to damage the industry's notoriously poor safety record. Thirteen others were rescued after the accident Friday at Babao Coal Mine in the city of Baishan in Jilin province, the official Xinhua news agency cited a spokesman with the provincial work safety and supervision bureau as saying. Rescue work has finished at the mine and the cause of the accident is under investigation, said the spokesman.
