Accused in toddler's patio death at Edmonton restaurant granted bail

EDMONTON - An Edmonton judge, unwavered by screaming and expletives from an angry crowd, granted bail to an accused drunk driver whose SUV plowed into a restaurant patio and killed a toddler. Two-year-old Geo Mounsef was pinned to a wall in the crash last weekend and later died in hospital. The boy's mother stormed out of the courtroom Friday while the judge was still reading her decision. The child's father then followed, shouting and swearing at the accused, who appeared on a video screen.

Alberta youths who shot sleeping five year old get maximum youth sentence

WETASKIWIN, Alta. - Three young people involved in the shooting death of a five-year-old boy on an Alberta reserve have received the maximum youth sentence for manslaughter. The teens took turns firing a rifle at a home on the Samson Cree reserve south of Edmonton in July 2011. One of the bullets hit Ethan Yellowbird in the head as he slept in his bed. Court heard two of the youths fired bullets into the home and one fired a shot over the house. The three, who were 13, 16 and 17 at the time of the shooting, pleaded guilty last fall to manslaughter.

Train plot suspect dismisses Canadian law, cites "holy book"

Pistorius awaits bail ruling

South African athlete Oscar Pistorius, who is accused of murdering his girlfriend, sobbed as a magistrate started reading out a ruling on his bail application Friday. The star sprinter's shoulders were shaking as magistrate Desmond Nair summarised the accused's statement in a hushed Pretoria courtroom. Nair had to pause briefly asking Pistorius: "Are you ok there?" He later regained his composure. Top prosecutor Gerrie Nel has opposed bail, saying Pistorius has the money, means and motive to flee his native South Africa.
