Boxing: Peterson stops Holt to keep light-welterweight title

Lamont Peterson, showing no rust after a 14-month layoff, stopped Kendall Holt in the eighth round on Friday to retain the International Boxing Federation light-welterweight crown. Peterson, once a homeless child on the streets of the US capital where he defended his title, improved to 31-1-1 with his 16th stoppage inside the distance when referee Tony Weeks stopped the fight after 1:42 of the eighth. Holt fell to 28-6 with his fourth loss in seven fights.

Boxing: Peterson set to defend crown after 14-month layoff

Lamont Peterson, finally set to defend the title he took from Britain's Amir Khan in controversial fashion 14 months ago, says his long layoff will not be a problem against Kendall Holt next week. Peterson won a controversial split decision in Washington over Khan after the Englishman was twice penalized a point for pushing. A planned rematch last May was called off after Peterson tested positive for a synthetic testosterone. The World Boxing Association restored its light-welterweight crown to Khan but the International Boxing Federation accepted an appeal by Peterson.
