Suspected Boston bomber charged with using weapon of mass destruction

BOSTON (Reuters) - Federal prosecutors charged the surviving man suspected of bombing the finish of last week's Boston Marathon with one count of using a weapon of mass destruction and one count of malicious destruction of property resulting in death, the Justice Department said on Monday. The charges authorize penalties including death, life in prison or a term in prison for any number of years, the Justice Department said in a statement.

Simon Limage, deputy assistant secretary of state for nonproliferation programs, emphasized that North Korea is among several nations that pose a threat to global nonproliferation efforts. He said especially North Korea and Iran have misused dual-used goods that have legitimate commercial applications, but can also be used to support illicit weapons programs.

Sanctions-hit Iran on Tuesday called for the destruction of all atomic weapons after North Korea announced that it had staged its most powerful nuclear test yet.
