At least four dead in California shooting spree

A gunman killed three people in California on Tuesday, including at least one execution-style, in a series of shootings and carjackings before taking his own life, police said. At least two other people were injured as the gunman fired randomly on other vehicles on a freeway, before he shot and killed himself near the city of Orange, south of Los Angeles. The suspect was identified as 20-year-old Ali Syed, who was unemployed, had no criminal record, and was living at home with his parents and taking a class at a local college.

At least two other people were injured as the gunman fired randomly on other vehicles while driving a stolen car on the freeway, before he shot and killed himself in the city of Orange, south of Los Angeles. The first killing appeared to be a woman found dead in her home in Ladera Ranch, after neighbors reported hearing gunfire in the early hours. The suspect, a man in his 20s, then fled in an SUV.

Heltebrake, 61, pulled over and immediately recognized the hulking, armed man as the fugitive ex-cop wanted in a killing spree, Christopher Dorner, whose face had been plastered on billboards, newspapers and televisions for nearly a week.
