Assault weapons ban shrivels in US Senate

US lawmakers dropped an effort to include a ban on assault weapons in a broader gun control package Tuesday, conceding the difficulties of passing such legislation through Congress. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, as proposed in the wake of last year's mass murder of schoolchildren in Newtown, Connecticut, did not have the votes to pass.

Democratic Majority Leader Harry Reid has said he wants a full Senate vote on Brennan's confirmation this week.

Senator Dianne Feinstein, the committee's chairwoman, said that the 12-3 committee vote now sends the nomination to the full Senate for a floor vote. "I hope the Senate acts quickly to confirm him," Feinstein said.
