The Scot will play in his first Davis Cup tie for two years, having been selected in the British team alongside Dan Evans, James Ward and Colin Fleming. The omission of Fleming's usual doubles partner Jonny Marray suggests Murray will team up again with his childhood friend Fleming, with whom he reached last month's Montreal Masters final.

Former world number four James Blake's tennis career came to an emotional end after 14 years on Thursday morning at the US Open with a standing ovation after a first-round loss to Ivo Karlovic. The 33-year-old American, who announced Monday this would be his farewell event, had fallen to 100th in the rankings and was far from the level that saw him reach the last eight on the Flushing Meadows hardcourts in 2005 and 2006.
