Peace dominates Ergenekon trial as suspects ask court to reject argument

Contrary to the previous session, the Ergenekon trial was held in a peaceful atmosphere on Thursday, with only a small number of protestors going to the Silivri Courthouse where the trial is held. Security measures were tight inside and outside the courthouse. Those who entered the building were frisked and searched with the help of police officers and detector dogs.

Main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu said a crime as big as 'genocide' is being committed against Istanbul's skyline. The CHP leader said on his Twitter account on Tuesday that neither humanity nor history will forgive those who destroy the historic skyline of the city. Retired armed forces commander Ilker Basbug was among 275 defendants whom prosecutors accused of attempting to stage a coup as part of the "Ergenekon terrorist group", an alleged underground network of secular arch-nationalists.
