U.S. allies plan big Gulf naval exercise in May

DUBAI (Reuters) - The United States and its allies will stage a naval exercise in the Gulf in May to practise minesweeping and escorting ships, the U.S. Navy said on Monday, a manoeuvre likely to be seen in the region as guarding against a potential threat from Iran. Representatives from more than 30 nations will gather in Bahrain for the International Mine Countermeasures Exercise (IMCMEX) 13 from May 6-30, eight months after they staged a previous edition of the exercises at a time when Israel and Iran were trading threats of war.

TDAP plans 3 exhibitions in ME, USA

Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) plans to hold three exhibitions in next three months in Middle East and the United States. According to an official, TDAP has devised a comprehensive strategy for promoting Pakistani exports abroad. He said the TDAP has already arranged 58 such exhibitions in American and Middle Eastern region in the last three years. Giving breakup he said 25 exhibitions had been held in United States of America, four in Brazil, 16 in United Arab Emirates, 10 in Saudi Arabia and one each in Iran, Oman and Iraq.

UAE court hears Islamists accused of plotting to seize power

The Federal Supreme Court of Abu Dhabi on Monday heard the lawyers of 94 Islamists accused of plotting to seize power in the United Arab Emirates before scheduling the next sessions to March 18 and 19. Eighty-five Islamists including 12 women appeared in court, for the second hearing in the largest trial in the history of the UAE, state news agency WAM reported quoting the justice ministry.

Kerry in Riyadh for Gulf talks on Iran, Syria

US Secretary of State John Kerry arrived in the Saudi capital on Sunday for talks with the Gulf monarchies on Iran and the deadly conflict roiling Syria. Kerry, on his first trip to the region since taking over as the top US diplomat, was to dine with foreign ministers of the Gulf Cooperation Council, the group of six Gulf monarchies including Saudi Arabia. On Monday he will hold separate talks with each GCC nation.

GCC states slam world inaction on Syria

The six Gulf monarchies on Sunday criticised world inaction on Syria and Iranian "interference" in their internal affairs ahead of a visit to the Saudi capital by US Secretary of State John Kerry. "The Syrian crisis has become more of a quasi-catastrophe through the unjustified killing of the Syrian people," Bahraini Foreign Minister Sheikh Khaled al-Khalifa said at the opening session of a Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) meeting.

Gulf monarchies reject 'provocative' Iran talks idea

The Gulf monarchies on Thursday rejected as a provocation an Iranian proposal to include the Syria crisis and the situation in Bahrain on the agenda of upcoming talks on Tehran's nuclear programme. The head of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Abdellatif Zayani, announced the "total rejection" of the Iranian proposition, calling it "a provocation" and "interference in the internal affairs of Arab states."
