RugbyU: Wallabies want to help fallen O'Connor

The Wallabies said Monday they will not be abandoning fallen star James O'Connor as he battles to rehabilitate his stalled rugby career. Coach Ewen McKenzie said he was keen to play a role in helping O'Connor, who had his contract torn up by the Australian Rugby Union (ARU) this month for repeated discipline breaches. The 23-year-old back was dumped from the national team in September after he was prevented from taking a flight because he was allegedly drunk, hours after Australia beat Argentina in a Rugby Championship match in Perth.

Rugby: Rebels open Super 15 with entertaining win

The Melbourne Rebels opened the 2013 Super 15 season in style with an entertaining 30-23 win over the Perth-based Western Force in Melbourne on Friday. The Rebels recovered from a slow start, coming from 11-0 down midway through the first half to overhaul the visitors, who have never won their opening Super rugby match since entering the competition in 2006. Both teams scored three tries apiece, but the Force were let down by a lack of discipline at key moments, with fullback James O'Connor booting three penalties to give the Rebels some crucial breathing space.
