Eleven people including five policemen have been injured in the Bulgarian capital Sofia as anti-government protesters fought running battles with riot police and vandalised buildings and vehicles late Monday, officials said. In the latest wave of anger against the government of Prime Minister Boyko Borisov sparked by sharply higher electricity prices, demonstrations were also held in around a dozen other cities across the European Union's poorest member.

Thousands join anti-government rallies across Bulgaria

Several thousand people joined street rallies across Bulgaria on Monday as initial protests against high electricity bills snowballed into bitter anger against the right-wing government of Prime Minister Boyko Borisov. Between 1,500 and 2,000 protesters marched on parliament in downtown Sofia on Monday evening, shouting "Mafia!", "Resign!" and "Garbage!"

Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov sacked Finance Minister Simeon Djankov on Monday in the wake of massive protests over the past week that erroded support for the right-wing government. "Prime Minister Boyko Borisov will propose to parliament to dismiss Simeon Djankov as deputy prime minister and minister of finance," the government press office said. Regional Development Minister Lilyana Pavlova, Borisov's most popular cabinet member with 30-percent support according to the latest Gallup opinion poll, will be proposed to step up as vice premier, it added.
