Italian diplomat held for alleged child abuse in Philippines

An Italian diplomat detained in the Philippines is being investigated for alleged child abuse after he was found in the company of three boys, the government said Monday. Justice Secretary Leila de Lima said police arrested Daniele Bosio at a water fun park near Manila at the weekend following a tip-off from a local child rights group. "He is now in detention while his case is undergoing preliminary investigation with the fiscal (prosecutor)," de Lima told AFP. "He was caught in the company of three boys, ages 8 to 12 year old."

World court awards Peru swathe of Chile's fish-rich sea

The UN's highest court on Monday handed Peru a wedge of sea under Chilean sovereignty, redrawing the border at the heart of a maritime dispute spanning more than a century. At least 19 die in Peru bus crash

At least 19 people died and 15 were injured Sunday when a bus plunged off a road in Peru's southeastern Huancavelica region, police told AFP. The bus fell some 80 meters (yards) at dawn on Sunday, while headed from Lima to the area of Acobamba, lieutenant Alberto Begazo told AFP. The bus, which belonged to the company Antezana, was traveling through a curvy ravine area in the Andes.

Magnitude 6.8 earthquake strikes off southern coast of Peru

16 dead as bus plunges into ravine in Peru

At least 16 people were killed and another 15 were injured Wednesday when an intercity bus plunged into a ravine in southern Peru, police said. "We have recovered 16 bodies and another 15 people were injured," police officer Jose Paredes told AFP from Huancavelica, the region in Peru's Andean south. The cause of the latest deadly crash was under investigation, Paredes said. On July 1, a bus fell into a ravine outside the capital Lima, killing 19 and injuring 15.

Quake shakes Peru's capital of Lima

LIMA (Reuters) - A moderate earthquake shook buildings in Peru's capital on Tuesday but there were no reported injuries or damage, Reuters witnesses and safety officials said. Peru's geological survey recorded a 5.6 magnitude quake, while the USGS said it measured 4.6 and was centered on the floor of the Pacific Ocean about 35 kilometers (21 miles) west of Lima. Balloon with 7 aboard reported missing off Peru

A hot air balloon carrying seven people was declared missing Sunday after disappearing over the Pacific Ocean south of Lima during a tourist excursion, its owner said. "We are looking at a probable accident, we assume the balloon has fallen," Globos Peru Sac manager Luis Miguel Fernandez told Lima's RPP radio station. Fernandez said the basket attached to balloon can float. "We hope that the seven occupants -- six tourists and the pilots, all Peruvians are in the basket," he said.

Brazilian-Spanish consortium to build hydro plant in Peru

Lima, Mar 22 (EFE).- A consortium made up of Spain's Corsan Corviam and Brazil's Engevix and Enex has been chosen to build a hydroelectric power station in southern Peru, officials said. The Andean nation's Private Investment Promotion Agency, or Proinversion, said Thursday in a statement that the dam to be built by the CEE consortium will require an investment outlay of roughly $600 million. The Molloco project, commissioned by the Energy and Mines Ministry, is located in the southern region of Arequipa.
