USOC trying to narrow potential 2024 candidates

(Reuters) - The United States Olympic Committee has not decided whether it will bid for the 2024 Summer Games but said on Tuesday it hopes to narrow down a list of cities capable of winning a bid within the next couple months. Interest in bringing the Olympics back to the United States is gaining momentum both at home and among International Olympic Committee (IOC) members.

Sports: Paris to host 2018 Gay Games

Paris won the right to host the 2018 Gay Games on Monday erasing memories of their defeat to German city Cologne for the 2010 edition. Paris saw off rivals London and the Irish city of Limerick for the honour of hosting what started out in 1982 as the Gay Olympics. They had to change the name to the Gay Games a few weeks before the inaugural event in 1982 after legal objections by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) over name rights.

Canada's Olympic red-mittens craze spreads south of the border

PARK CITY, Utah - The U.S. Olympic Committee is taking a page from the red-mittens craze Canada sparked at the 2010 Vancouver Games. The USOC will start selling its own blue mittens — with the words "Go USA" embroidered on the palms — on Oct. 29. They'll go for $14 a pair on the USOC website. Proceeds from the sales will help U.S. athletes on their way to Sochi, Russia. USOC spokesman Patrick Sandusky acknowledges this isn't the first time the United States has borrowed an idea from its neighbours to the north.

Olympics: Armstrong says medal headed back to IOC

Disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong has handed over his 2000 Olympic bronze medal to US Olympic officials, nine months after the International Olympic Committee demanded it back, he said on Thursday. "The 2000 Bronze is back in possession of @usolympics and will be in Switzerland asap to @Olympics," Armstrong said on Twitter, posting a photo of the medal. USOC spokesman Patrick Sandusky confirmed on Twitter that the American body had the medal.

IOC seals restored ties with U.S. by voting in Probst

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) - The International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirmed its restored ties with the United States on Tuesday, after a long-standing revenue dispute was settled last year, by electing U.S. Olympic Committee president Larry Probst into its membership. Probst becomes the fourth United States member within the IOC, joining Anita DeFrantz, Jim Easton and Angela Ruggiero.

Philadelphia considering 2024 Olympics bid, mayor says
