Cycling: Injured Vicioso withdraws from Giro - team

Spanish rider Angel Vicioso, injured in a fall on the ninth stage of the Tour of Italy, will take no further part in the race, his team, Katusha, announced on Monday. The 36-year-old former Giro stage winner suffered three broken ribs, a wrist fracture, a damaged left shoulder and bruising to his right side during the crash on Sunday. He managed to finish the stage in Florence in 177th position at the back of the main peloton. Monday was a rest day for the riders before Tuesday's 167-kilometre 10th stage from Cordenons in northeast Italy to Montasio.

Feb 20 (Reuters) - Katusha has provisionally suspended Spanish rider Angel Vicioso for failing to appear at a high-profile doping trial in his home country, the Russian cycling team said on Wednesday. "As of now Vicioso is suspended from all competitions," a Katusha spokesman told Reuters. The 35-year-old is one of several world-class athletes being linked to Spanish doctor Eufemiano Fuentes, who is currently on trial for allegedly masterminding a doping ring.
