Anger as Afghan MPs halt women's bill debate

The Afghan parliament on Saturday cut short a debate on a bill to protect women from violence after complaints from some traditionalist MPs that it was against Islamic teaching. The Elimination of Violence against Women (EVAW) law, which was passed by a presidential decree in 2009, is seen as a benchmark piece of legislation marking progress since the fall of the Taliban regime nearly 12 years ago.

Turkish pianist sentenced for blasphemy to be retried

An Istanbul court on Friday canceled the conviction of pianist Fazil Say, who was earlier this month sentenced for blasphemy over posts on social media, and accepted his request for a retrial, the state-run Anatolia news agency reported. Say, a world-renowned pianist, was on April 15 handed a 10-month suspended jail term for insulting religious values, in a ruling that drew international criticism of Turkey's freedom of expression record.

Indonesia teens accused of blasphemy over Maroon 5 dance

Five Indonesian teenage girls have been accused of blasphemy and may face jail after making a video in which they mixed Islamic prayer with dancing to a Maroon 5 song, police said Tuesday. The girls were expelled from their high school in Tolitoli city, on Sulawesi island, and reported to police after the video of their dance to the US band's hit "One More Night" went viral online.

Egypt suspends prosecutor for ordering 80 lashes

Egypt's attorney general has suspended a prosecutor after he ordered the flogging of a man arrested for drinking alcohol, a spokesman said Monday. The prosecution suspended Hussein Anani and opened an investigation, overturning his decision to condemn the man to 80 lashes, said prosecution spokesman Mahmud el-Hifnawy. Apart from ordering the man to be flogged, Anani instructed police in the southern province of Mina to carry out the punishment based on Islamic sharia law.

The pianist was not present in court during the sentencing.

Egypt's court dismisses suspending satirist's show over mocking president

Egypt's administrative court ruled on Saturday not to suspend a satirist's TV show accused of mocking the president and blasphemy, official news agency MENA reported. The court has dismissed a lawsuit that was filed to suspend the political comic show "The Program" and the CBC channel which airs the weekly program. On March 30, Prosecutor-General Talaat Ibrahim Abdullah issued an arrest warrant against satirist Bassem Youssef, author of "The Program," who was accused of mocking Islamist-oriented President Mohamed Morsi, uttering blasphemous comments on Islam and spreading false
