Spain's king leaves intensive care after back surgery

Spain's 75-year-old King Juan Carlos left intensive care Monday after undergoing lower back surgery at a Madrid hospital. The king was discharged in the morning from the intensive care unit of the La Milagrosa hospital, where he will continue his recovery, the director of the hospital. Gaspar Palet, told reporters. "Juan Carlos' progress during the night was really good and he was able to rest," he said.

Madrid, Mar 3 (EFE).- Spain's King Juan Carlos underwent surgery for a herniated disc at a Madrid hospital on Sunday, and Royal Household spokesmen said that the operation was successful. The 75-year-old monarch is now recovering in the La Milagrosa clinic in the capital, where the operation was performed and where he will remain for a week before being released to continue his recovery at Zarzuela Palace. Juan Carlos was brought out of surgery three hours after entering the operating theater, where he was operated upon by neurosurgeon Manuel de la Torre Gutierrez.

Spain's king faces surgery for slipped disc: palace

Spain's King Juan Carlos will have surgery for a slipped disc on March 3, the royal palace said Thursday, in what will be the 75-year-old monarch's seventh operation in three years. The king has a herniated disc in his lower back for which "the most suitable treatment... is a surgical operation", the palace's head doctor Miguel Fernandez Tapia-Ruano said in a statement. Juan Carlos is widely respected for his role in steering Spain to democracy after the death of the dictator General Francisco Franco in 1975.
