President Dalia Grybauskaite's chief adviser on economic and social policy issues Nerijus Udrenas says that if we explored shale gas in Lithuania and started to use it, maybe we would have less such instances of abnormal spring as it is now."Some scientists claim that such disorderly and abnormal climate is due to increased carbon dioxide levels which are growing all over the world. The use of gas allows us to reduce carbon dioxide emissions because it is less polluting than coal.

Lithuania's GDP from 2014 to start growing by over 5 pct - Ernst'n'Young

This year, Lithuania's GDP should grow by 3.5 percent, while in the period from 2014 to 2017 the country can expect a growth of over 5 percent, a forecast by Ernst & Young and Oxford Economics says. The forecast also says that the GDP growth will be stimulated by increasing volumes of foreign trade. Last year, the growth of exports to Russia offset trade with the weakened eurozone. As a result, Lithuania's business exports volume increased by 14.5 percent, while imports went up by 10 percent.

Italy compensates Lithuania for Soviet embassy grab

Italy agreed Thursday to hand over a property in central Rome to Lithuania as compensation for an embassy building seized by the Soviet Union on the eve of World War II. Lithuania will take over 700 square metres (7,500 square feet) in Palazzo Blumenstihl free-of-charge on a 99-year lease, under the deal signed by Italian Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi and his Lithuanian counterpart Linas Linkevicius. "De facto it becomes our property," Linkevicius said of the premises worth an estimated nine million euros ($11.8 million).
