Madagascar cyclone death toll climbs to 23

The death toll from tropical cyclone Haruna and heavy rains that have battered Madagascar has risen to 23 with 16 people missing, the national disaster management agency said on Tuesday. The cyclone struck on Friday morning in the southwest region of the Indian Ocean island. Latest figures showed that at least 84 people had been injured and nearly 23,000 others affected. The cyclone brought heavy rains and strong gusts of wind reaching speeds of 200 kmh (125 mph).

Cyclone Haruna kills one in Madagascar, threatens towns

Tropical cyclone Haruna has hit the large Indian Ocean island nation of Madagascar, claiming one life and threatening some 30 southern towns, authorities said. The cyclone struck Madagascar 15 hours earlier than expected, having "deviated from its trajectory and landed 50 kilometres (31 miles) from the (southeastern) town of Morombe at around 6:00 am (0300 GMT)", the head of the forecasting division of the meteorological service, Ndinizara Newsman de Priscofe, told AFP.
