Gunman shoots 6 at government building in northern Mexico

Monterrey, Mexico, May 9 (EFE).- Five guards and a state employee were wounded when a subject opened fire Thursday outside the Governor's Palace in Saltillo, the capital of the northern Mexican state of Coahuila, officials said. "It was a direct attack on the guards, wounding five police officers and a civilian who was working there," state security spokesman Jesus Carranza told Efe. The subject, identified as Jose Maria Segura Gutierrez, was arrested, Carranza said.

Shootouts leave 11 dead in northeast Mexico

Mexico City, May 5 (EFE).- At least 11 people, including a soldier, died in three shootouts between army troops and armed civilians in the northeastern Mexican state of Tamaulipas, the state government said Sunday. The shootouts occurred on Saturday, the Tamaulipas Attorney General's Office said in a statement. "The first of the shootouts occurred at 2:30 p.m. in La Presa, an agricultural community south of the town of Valadeces, city of Gustavo Diaz Ordaz, where two armed civilians died," the AG's office said.

Army kills 4 gunmen in northern Mexico

Mexico City, Feb 28 (EFE).- Army troops killed at least four suspected gunmen in a shootout in Monclova, a city in the northern Mexican state of Coahuila, prosecutors said. The shootout occurred in Monclova's Pipila district, where the soldiers were on patrol, the Coahuila Attorney General's Office said in a statement. The soldiers were attacked by armed civilians and "four assailants lost their lives when the aggression was repelled," the AG's office said.

Mexican daily hit by third attack this week

International News Desk, Feb 28 (EFE).- Unidentified individuals opened fire on the offices of the El Siglo newspaper in Torreon, a city in the northern Mexican state of Coahuila, for the third day in a row, slightly wounding two people, the daily reported on its Web site Thursday. The attack on Wednesday caused damage to the offices, the newspaper said. The unidentified occupants of a vehicle opened fire with AK-47 assault rifles on the building's entrance, hitting the structure 30 times, El Siglo said.

8 Slain in northern Mexico

Monterrey, Mexico, Feb 18 (EFE).- The bodies of eight murder victims were found within a 24-hour period in this northern metropolis, Mexican police said. A young boy in Monterrey's Colonia Moderna neighborhood found human remains inside two black garbage bags he came across Sunday morning. The gruesome discovery was made just a few blocks from the headquarters of the Nuevo Leon state police City, state and federal cops, joined by elements of the army, rushed to the scene and determined that the remains were those of one man.

Mexican Facebook page threatened over crime posts

A Facebook wall post denouncing crime is apparently dangerous stuff in Mexico's drug-infested north, where the administrator of a popular page on the social network has received threats. The page Valor por Tamaulipas has more than 164,000 "likes" as people follow its updates on gunfights, kidnappings, the presence of gunmen or roadblocks set up by drug traffickers in the state of Tamaulipas. But the page has garnered enemies as well.
