Photographer on quest for Spanish roots of U.S. Southwest

Austin, Apr 21 (EFE).- Spanish photographer Janire Najera is crisscrossing more than 3,000 kilometers (nearly 2,000 miles) of roads between New Mexico and California in search of the Spanish roots of the U.S. Southwest. "What I've seen in New Mexico, I hadn't seen anywhere else in the United States, it's awesome," Najera, who works out of Wales and Bilbao, Spain, told Efe. "The people you find, the way they know their culture, how proud they are of Spain. In fact, there are Spanish flags in the streets and on the cars," the photographer said.

European news agencies focus on Web, social-networking sites

Madrid, Apr 9 (EFE).- Europe's leading news agencies agreed at a meeting in the Spanish capital Wednesday on the need to shift their reporting influence to the Web and social-networking sites to survive without compromising their "historical principles" of truth and impartiality.

Music students from Spain and LatAm flock to Vienna

Vienna, Apr 7 (EFE).- Hundreds of music students from around the world flock to Vienna each year to work on their skills at the Austrian capital's highly respected conservatories, with students from Spain and Latin America increasingly heading to the city due to its competitive costs. Figures provided to Efe by the Vienna Conservatory show that about 55 percent of its 855 students are from abroad, while Vienna's University of Music and Performing Arts, or MDW, says 47 percent of its 1,488 students are from outside of Austria.

Agencia EFE unveils plans for revamped English Service

Bridgetown, Apr 6 (EFE).- Agencia EFE on Sunday unveiled plans here to relaunch its English news service by opening offices in different cities around the world to provide 24-hour coverage in English. The current service, which is produced in Miami, will be expanded over the next few months, boosting production initially to an average of 100 stories per day plus regional reporting and other services. EFE's new project was unveiled in Barbados, where the Inter American Press Association, or IAPA, is holding its 2014 midyear meeeting.

Companies deliver Panama City metro in record time and without cost overruns

Panama City, Apr 5 (EFE).- The Spanish companies involved in construction of the Panama City metro, to be inaugurated Saturday evening, said the project was delivered in "world record" time and within the budget constraints. "This is a world record. No one has built a project like this in such little time," Jose Luis Manzanares, CEO of Barcelona-based engineering firm Ayesa, told Efe during the final trial run of Central America's first subway system.

Spanish emigrants in U.S. gather in Washington

Washington, Mar 28 (EFE).- A total of 18 associations of Spaniards living in the United States gathered this week in Washington for a meeting that ended Friday and at which they decided to found a unifying federation. The 34th Congress of the Association of Spanish Professionals in America, known by the Spanish acronym ALDEEU, was organized in collaboration with Spain's embassy in Washington.

EFE celebrates 75th anniversary with stress on LatAm ties

Bogota, Mar 28 (EFE).- Agencia EFE inaugurated in the Colombian capital a photo exhibit recounting the agency's 75 years of operation through images of the modern history of Spain and Latin America. The exposition is "a reflection of the agency's wager on Latin America as a fundamental pillar," Alfredo Aycart, EFE's director-general for the Americas, said. The images recall conflict and tragedies, but also many "brilliant and passionate moments" from the realms of sport and culture, he told distinguished guests at Thursday night's opening.

Awarding of Spain journalism prizes to coincide with EFE anniversary event

Madrid, Mar 13 (EFE).- The 2014 King of Spain International Journalism Prizes will be presented in conjunction with the opening here in May of a massive exposition commemorating the 75th anniversary of Agencia EFE. The names of the winners, including news professionals from Spain, Argentina, Brazil, Peru, the United States and Nicaragua, were announced Wednesday. The prizes are organized by Agencia EFE and Spain's State Secretariat for International Cooperation and Ibero-America.

Gas leak blamed for deadly blast in New York

New York, Mar 12 (EFE).- The collapse on Wednesday of two apartment buildings in New York's East Harlem neighborhood that left at least three people dead, nine missing and 22 others injured was due to a gas leak explosion, Mayor Bill de Blasio said. "This is a tragedy of the worst kind," he told reporters at the disaster scene. "(T)he only indication of danger came about 15 minutes earlier when a gas leak was reported to (utility) Con Edison. Con Ed dispatched a team to respond. The explosion occurred before that team could arrive," the mayor said.
