Argentina's Pluspetrol fined $7 mn for pond damage in Peru

Lima, Nov 29 (EFE).- Argentina's Pluspetrol has been fined 20 million soles (some $7.19 million) for polluting and destroying a pond in Peru's northeastern Amazon region, authorities told Efe. The fine was imposed on Nov. 22 by Peru's OEFA environmental protection agency, which said Pluspetrol polluted the Shanshococha pond with liquid hydrocarbons and caused irreparable harm to the ecosystem. The company was ordered to construct a new pond as a "corrective measure." The fine is subject to appeal.

Agencia EFE honored for boosting global profile of Spanish firms

Madrid, Nov 27 (EFE).- Agencia EFE was recognized on Wednesday by the Spanish Exporters and Investors Club for its "special" contribution to the international expansion of Spain's companies. EFE President Jose Antonio Vera accepted the Internationalization Prize on behalf of Spain's international news agency. The agency is conscious that it has a "fundamental obligation" to provide "especially visible" coverage of Spanish firms' global activities, Vera said.

3 More bodies found in clandestine graves in western Mexico

Mexico City, Nov 26 (EFE).- The search for two federal law enforcement agents who disappeared in western Mexico in early November has led to the discovery of eight clandestine graves containing the remains of 48 people, officials said. Six more bodies were discovered Monday at the site in La Barca, a city in the western state of Jalisco, but the remains of the two agents have not yet been found, Attorney General's Office spokesmen told Efe.

Washington, Nov 25 (EFE).- Agencia EFE correspondent Fernando Mexia has been honored in the TV/Video/Film News category at the 6th National Entertainment Journalism Awards. The prizes were awarded Sunday night during a gala at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles. University creates program to help doctors communicate with Hispanic patients

Mexico's central bank lowers 2013 growth forecast

Mexico City, Nov 7 (EFE).- Mexico's economy will likely expand at a clip of between 0.9 percent and 1.4 percent in 2013, according to the central bank, which had earlier projected GDP growth of between 2 percent and 3 percent. The latest range given Wednesday by the Banco de Mexico is lower than the growth estimate of 1.7 percent provided by President Enrique Peña Nieto's administration, which had revised its figures in the wake of two hurricanes in September.
