Miami, May 1 (EFE).- Spain's foreign minister emphasized here Wednesday the continuing importance of the Spanish legacy in the United States, although he acknowledged that much remains to be done to "recover" the value of the Hispanic presence in this country.

"It was a very tough route, but full of experiences and complete, because I managed to do it right on the fifth centennial of Ponce de Leon's trip," he said.

Today, half a millennium later, Florida celebrates the 5th centennial of an event the signified the first European presence in what is today the United States.

Spaniard sets off on jet ski journey from Puerto Rico to Florida

San Juan, Mar 20 (EFE).- Spanish adventurer Alvaro de Marichalar departed from San Juan for Florida on Wednesday on board a jet ski on a 15-day journey of 1,624 nautical miles through the Caribbean to retrace the trip made five centuries ago by explorer Juan Ponce de Leon. Marichalar, without any support vessels in attendance, set sail from the dock at the Club Nautico in San Juan, where he told Efe that he was scared but at the same time confident that he would successfully accomplish this new adventure.

San Juan, Mar 18 (EFE).- Spanish adventurer Alvaro de Marichalar will depart from San Juan for Florida this week on board a jet ski on a journey of 1,624 nautical miles through the Caribbean without any support vessels nearby. Marichalar told Efe on Monday that the lack of a support ship will not prevent him from heading for St. Augustine, Florida, where he intends to arrive on April 3.

Spanish navy training ship sails for Americas

Las Palmas, Spain, Mar 10 (EFE).- The Spanish navy training ship Juan Sebastian de Elcano, named after the first man to circumnavigate the earth, sailed from the Canary Islands on Sunday for Puerto Rico on a new training cruise and will take part in different events in the Americas, the navy said.

Majority in Spain see corruption as worst blot on country's image

Madrid, Feb 22 (EFE).- Fifty-two percent of Spaniards see political corruption as the worst blot on Spain's image abroad, a survey released Friday shows. That information comes from the latest poll taken by the Elcano Royal Institute, an independent think-tank, while 19.1 percent of respondents identified high unemployment and poverty as the most negative aspect of their nation's international image. The 1,000 Spanish citizens surveyed during the first two weeks of February said Spain was the most corrupt country on a list that included countries like Morocco and China.
