Football: Liberians stun Kotoko with late winner

Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko were the major casualties of the CAF Champions League preliminary round after losing 1-0 to Liberians Barrack Young Controllers at the weekend. Blamo Nimely struck five minutes from time in Monrovia to give Controllers a 1-0 win and a last-32 place in the premier African club football competition. Champions League debutants Controllers advanced on the away-goal rule having lost the first leg 2-1 in Kumasi last weekend. Kotoko, popularly called the 'Porcupine Warriors', have been African champions twice and runners-up five times.

Football: Tanzanian ice cream club melt in Morocco cauldron

Tanzanian ice cream company club Azam had two players red carded and missed a penalty as they crashed out of the CAF Confederation Cup this weekend. Azam lost a fiery last-16 second leg 2-1 at FAR Rabat of Morocco to exit the second-tier competition by the same aggregate score having been held 0-0 in Dar es Salaam two weeks ago. After achieving better results on the road in previous rounds, England-born Azam coach Stewart Hall was confident of success at Stade Prince Moulay Abdellah in the Moroccan capital.

Football: CAF disqualify Nigerian club

Nigerian club Heartland have been disqualified from the CAF Confederation Cup, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) confirmed Sunday. Heartland arrived late in Libreville last weekend for a round-of-32, second leg fixture against US Bitam and the Gabonese side claimed a walk-over under the competition rules. The CAF club competitions committee backed the Gabonese, saying they could find no legitimate reason why the Nigerians did not arrive on time to play the match in the second-tier African club competition.
