Alpine skiing: Women's Garmisch World Cup event called off

The women's World Cup alpine skiing event at Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Germany on January 25-26 has been called off due to insufficient snow, organisers said Monday. The Bavarian resort that hosted the 2011 World Championships was due to stage a downhill on the Saturday and a super-G on the Sunday. But unseasonably mild weather has seen those events cancelled. For the moment, the men's World Cup event on February 1-2 at the same venue, the last before the Winter Olympics in Sochi from February 7-23, is being maintained.

Alpine skiing: Death threat fails to faze Maze

Overall World Cup winner Tina Maze of Slovenia said Sunday she was not concerned despite receiving an emailed death threat before her race at Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Maze, 29, finished fourth in Sunday's Super-G and won Saturday's downhill race here to become the first skier to collect more than 2000 World Cup points in a season, breaking Austria legend Hermann Maier's 13-year-old record. But Maze, the Super-G world champion, was assigned police protection on Saturday after race organisers received death threats against her via email.
