RugbyL: Williams faces NRL ban for shoulder charge

Dual international Sonny Bill Williams is facing up to four weeks on the sidelines after being cited by the National Rugby League Friday for making a banned shoulder charge in the season opener. The Kiwi superstar, who is returning to rugby union next year, is under the scrutiny of the league's judiciary after using his shoulder in a tackle playing for the Sydney Roosters against South Sydney on Thursday. Souths downed the defending NRL and world club champions 28-8 in a torrid match which featured a number of ferocious physical exchanges between the two local rivals.

SYDNEY, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- The Australian National Rugby League (NRL) has announced a new set of measures for preventing a repeat of the Cronulla doping scandal, local media reported on Thursday. The allegations of the possible use of banned substances by players of Australian rugby league team Cronulla Sharks in 2011 overshadowed the past year. The NRL announced at its chief executives meeting on Wednesday that each club will be required to form a supplement committee to approve and oversee the distribution of supplements to players.

Tonga on Tuesday named a 24-man squad, weakened by injuries and the defection of key players to more powerful rivals, for the Rugby League World Cup. Coach Charles Tonga said he was still able to field a formidable young team, many who play in Australia and New Zealand, captained by Manly's Penrith-bound prop Brent Kite. "Despite losing many talented players to injury and other countries, we are fortunate to have many young guys willing to represent the nation," Tonga said. "We are doing this for our people, to give back to our country."
