Puerto Rico's Mayaguez presents 1st culinary festival

San Juan, Feb 28 (EFE).- The Puerto Rican town of Mayaguez is organizing this weekend its first culinary festival in which some 80 gastronomic experts will take part, including some of the best-known chefs and restaurants on the island. The 2014 Mayaguez Culinary Fest, to be held as a benefit for the American Cancer Society, will take place in the western coastal city Saturday at the seaside recreational complex known as Paseo del Litoral Israel "Shorty" Castro.

Spanish tourism writers gather in Puerto Rico

Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, Dec 4 (EFE).- The Spanish Confederation of Tourism Press and Writers, or Fepet, chose this western Puerto Rican city as the site for its annual conference. "The holding of this assembly here is a step forward for the efforts that Mayagüez is making to push Porta del Sol tourism," the manager of the municipal Office of Tourist Development, Nelson Albino, told Efe on Wednesday. Mayagüez has been working for months to increase tourism via participating in different tourism fairs in Europe, Albino said.

8 Cuban immigrants rescued on Puerto Rico coast

San Juan, Oct 31 (EFE).- Eight undocumented Cuban migrants were rescued by federal authorities as they disembarked on the western coast of Puerto Rico, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection office in San Juan announced Thursday. The group was located on Wednesday by CBP and Coast Guard personnel as they arrived on board a boat at Mona Island, which lies between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. The Coast Guard transported the Cubans to the Rafael Hernandez international airport in Aguadilla, where CBP agents took custody of them.

91 Undocumented migrants detained in Puerto Rico

San Juan, Oct 3 (EFE).- Puerto Rican authorities on Thursday detained 91 undocumented migrants from Haiti and the Dominican Republic as they were trying to illegally enter the U.S. commonwealth, police said. The group was made up of 60 men, 27 women and a child, all Haitians, and three Dominicans, the Puerto Rico Police Department said in a statement.

57 Undocumented migrants detained in Puerto Rico

San Juan, Sep 3 (EFE).- Federal and local autoridades detained Tuesday 56 Haitians and a Cuban who were trying to enter Puerto Rico illegally, police in the U.S. commonwealth said Tuesday. According to a preliminary report, the U.S. Coast Guard detected the arrival of the undocumented migrants while on surveillance maneuvers at the island of Desecheo. Authorities have not specified the number of men, women or children who landed on the island, but the Coast Guard has assumed custody of them for the moment and will soon turn them over to judicial authorities.

58 Haitian migrants detained in Puerto Rico

San Juan, Jun 4 (EFE).- The U.S. Coast Guard and Puerto Rican police detained 58 undocumented Haitians on Tuesday as they tried to enter U.S. territory illegally on the west coast of Puerto Rico. The Puerto Rico Police Department said in a communique that the Haitians were caught on the small island of Desecheo, 20 kilometers (12 miles) from Rincon, a municipality on the west coast of the Caribbean island. The communique said that among the undocumented were women and children, and that no remains exist of the boat in which they sailed to Puerto Rico.

Authorities detain 71 Haitian migrants in Puerto Rico

San Juan, Mar 10 (EFE).- Border Patrol officers and U.S. Coast Guard personnel detained 71 Haitian migrants who arrived on several islands off the coast of western Puerto Rico, officials said. The first group of migrants was spotted early Friday, when the Coast Guard detained two Haitians on the islet of Monito, the Border Patrol said in a statement. A Coast Guard ship and Border Patrol helicopters rescued 69 other Haitians who had arrived on Desecheo Island, located near the city of Rincon.
