'Avengers 2' filming to continue in Gangnam over weekend

SEOUL, April 4 (Yonhap) -- Traffic in Seoul's Gangnam area will be restricted this weekend to accommodate the filming of the sequel to the Hollywood box office hit "The Avengers," police said Friday. Two roads leading to Cheongdam Grand Bridge over the Han River will be closed in both directions for the shooting of "Avengers: Age of Ultron" from 4:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, police said.

SEOUL, April 2 (Yonhap) -- Shooting of the sequel to the Hollywood film "The Avengers" continued in Seoul Wednesday, disrupting traffic as one of the capital's major roads was completely restricted. The World Cup buk-ro -- a road that runs through Sangam-dong in western Seoul -- was closed in both directions to accommodate filming crews of "Avengers: Age of Ultron." The second round of shooting, which began around 6 a.m. Wednesday and is expected to continue until Friday, left thousands of commuters hassled.

Seoul to limit plastic surgery ads

The South Korean capital Seoul is to restrict the use of plastic surgery adverts on public transport, officials said Wednesday, after complaints that they were fuelling an unhealthy obsession with body image. South Korea, and particularly Seoul, has an international reputation for plastic surgery, and adverts featuring famous surgeons and giant before-and-after photos are omnipresent -- on street billboards, subway trains, bus stops and the backs of bus seats.

Seoul's Gangnam creates 'K-Star Road' for Korean pop culture

SEOUL, March 12 (Yonhap) -- The office of Seoul's Gangnam District, most popularized by rapper Psy's eponymous song, opened a street Wednesday featuring diverse stories of Korean pop stars, to promote culture and tourism in its posh neighborhood. The "K-Star Road" is an around 1-kilometer-long street between Galleria Department Store and the country's top entertainment agencies of SM Entertainment and Cube Entertainment in the Apgujeong area, southern Seoul.

Foreign tourists to Seoul top 10 mln last year

SEOUL, Jan. 23 (Yonhap) -- The number of foreign visitors to Seoul surpassed the 10 million mark for the first time last year thanks to a jump in the number of Chinese tourists, data showed Thursday. Of the 12.17 million foreign tourists who entered South Korea last year, about 10.04 million foreigners are believed to have visited the country's capital city, according to the data by the Seoul Institute. The number of Chinese tourists jumped 53 percent on-year to 3.56 million last year, while that of Japanese visitors tumbled 22 percent to 2.26 million.

Police raid KORAIL union offices

SEOUL, Dec. 17 (Yonhap) -- Police on Tuesday raided the offices of the state-run rail operator's labor union as part of their investigation into an ongoing strike by thousands of its members. With a court-issued warrant, a team of 30 officers seized computer hard drives and confidential documents during the raid at the two offices of the union of Korea Railroad Corp. (KORAIL) in central Seoul, officers said.

Seoul's Gangnam launches trolley tours

SEOUL, Dec. 12 (Yonhap) -- Foreign and domestic tourists will be able to enjoy trolley tours to popular destinations in Seoul's posh Gangnam region beginning Thursday, the district office said. The new program will run every day from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and tourists can hop on and off at any of the 21 designated stops. The whole tour will take 105 minutes, according to the Gangnam District Office.

S. Korea introduces 'Gangnam Style' tourist police

South Korea unveiled its new "tourist police" force Wednesday, with snappy uniforms from rapper Psy's costume designer and a "Gangnam Style" launch in central Seoul. Around 100 young policemen and women make up the first batch of the new force -- formed to protect tourists from being ripped off during their stay in the South Korean capital. The officers were handpicked for their linguistic skills, and can speak a range of languages including English, Japanese and Mandarin.
