Japan, U.S. fail to move closer over TPP before Obama visit

Japan and the United States failed Wednesday to move closer over outstanding issues in their bilateral talks related to a Pacific regional trade pact, providing little hope of a breakthrough before U.S. President Barack Obama's visit to Tokyo scheduled for only two weeks away.

The U.S. trade chief said Tuesday that the Trans-Pacific Partnership initiative aims at a higher level of trade liberalization than the accord reached by Japan and Australia, playing down the impact of the bilateral agreement on the broader TPP negotiations. "I don't think it (the Japan-Australia free trade agreement) has much effect one way or the other" on the 12-country TPP talks, said U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman, who is slated to meet with his Japanese counterpart Akira Amari in Tokyo on Wednesday to discuss outstanding TPP issues.

SEJONG, April 2 (Yonhap) -- South Korea will open a second round of preliminary talks on its participation in a regional free trade agreement known as the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), starting with bilateral talks with the United States, the trade ministry said Wednesday. The meeting will be held Thursday in Washington, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. It will be followed by a separate meeting with Canadian officials in Ottawa on Monday.

Japan gives U.S. cold shoulder in TPP negotiating countries

After talks with the United States last month on the Trans-Pacific Partnership free trade agreement resulted in a stalemate, Japan now plans to give priority to talks with the other 10 TPP negotiating countries, government sources said Monday. Japan had planned to reach an accord with the United States on tariff reductions on farm imports before taking advantage of the Japan-U.S. agreement to accelerate overall TPP negotiations.
