The death toll from a fire in an overcrowded prison in the Colombian city of Barranquilla rose to 16 Thursday, more than a week after the blaze, authorities said. Inmates of Barranquilla's Modelo prison started the fire January 27, setting alight mattresses during a fight between rival gangs. Authorities reported the deaths of 10 inmates at the time, but six more have died of their injuries since the weekend. "Two died today from serious burns and respiratory problems," the Caribbean city's health department said in a statement.

Bogota, Jan 28 (EFE).- Ten people died and 42 others were injured in a fire at Modelo prison in the northern Colombian city of Barranquilla, Atlantico province Gov. Jose Antonio Segebre said Tuesday. Some inmates with slight injuries have now been released from hospitals in the city, but at least 15 are still being treated for the severe burns they suffered or for the smoke they inhaled. Segebre visited the jail before dawn with the director of Colombia's Inpec prisons service, Gen. Saul Torres.

A fire at a prison in Colombia killed nine inmates and left 25 injured, the head of the country's penitentiary system said Tuesday. The blaze broke out Monday night at a prison in the northern city of Barranquilla, said the official, Saul Torres.
