Peasant leader gunned down in southern Mexico

Mexico City, Jan 7 (EFE).- A peasant leader in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca was gunned down Tuesday, but the motive for the killing has not been determined, prosecutors said. Inocente Maximino Cortes Garcia was killed in the city of Miahuatlan de Porfirio Diaz, the Oaxaca Attorney General's Office said. Cortes Garcia's body had "several gunshot wounds," the AG's office said in a statement. Six bullet casings were found at the shooting scene, prosecutors said. "No line of investigation has been ruled out," the AG's office said.

10 Burned bodies found in vehicle in southern Mexico

Mexico City, Dec 15 (EFE).- Ten burned bodies were found in an SUV in Santiago Juxtlahuaca, a city in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca, along with another body that had gunshot wounds, officials said. The bodies were discovered on Saturday, the Oaxaca Attorney General's Office said. The dead man with gunshot wounds was found just a few meters from the vehicle, the AG's office said. The grisly discovery was made at a stop in the road called Tres Cruces, the AG's office said.

Eleven bodies found in southern Mexico

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Ten charred bodies were found in a burnt-out truck in Mexico's southern Oaxaca state on Saturday, the state's prosecutor's office said. Another corpse was found shot in the head a short distance away from the truck near the town of Santiago Juxtlahuaca, the office said in a statement. The town is about 93 miles west of state capital Oaxaca City. The statement said none of the bodies had been identified and gave no indication as to a possible motive.

Mexican town creates wireless network

Mexico City, Aug 20 (EFE).- Villa Talea de Castro, a town in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca, is creating its own cellular telephone network due to lack of interest on the part of wireless companies in serving the mountain community of 2,500 people. "The neighboring communities are interested in the project so the antennas can be linked in an autonomous community network," Villa Talea de Castro secretary Alejandro Lopez Canseco said in a telephone interview with Efe. The town plans to acquire more equipment and provide the existing gear to another community, Lopez said.

PRI candidate wounded in Mexico attack, husband dies

Mexico City, Jun 29 (EFE).- The candidate for a local legislative seat in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca, Rosalia Palma, was wounded Saturday in an attack that took her husband's life, officials at the state Attorney General's Office told Efe. The incident occurred near Palma's district of Teposcolula - she is one of the candidates in the July 7 elections to represent the ruling Institutional Revolutionary Pary, or PRI, in the Oaxaca state legislature.

Leftist politician reported missing in southern Mexico

Mexico City, Jun 18 (EFE).- A National Democratic Left movement leader in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca has been missing since last weekend, the political party said Tuesday. Nicolas Estrada Merino went missing on Saturday while driving from his house in Tuxtepec to his sisters' house in the same city. The National Democratic Left is a movement within the Party of the Democratic Revolution, or PRD.

5 Slain in southern Mexico

Mexico City, Jun 14 (EFE).- Five people were fatally shot in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca, the regional Attorney General's Office said Friday. The killings took place Thursday night on Highway 90 in the municipality of San Pedro Totolapan. Police found around 70 shell casings from AK-47 and AR-15 assault rifles at the murder scene, the AG's office said in a statement. Those weapons are favored by drug cartels and other organized crime outfits.

Gunmen attack mayor in southern Mexico

Mexico City, May 13 (EFE).- The mayor of Santiago Amoltepec, a small town in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca, was ambushed by gunmen and shot over the weekend, media reports said Monday. Luis Jimenez is listed in serious condition with gunshot wounds, Milenio television reported. The mayor was ambushed by several armed subjects on Sunday night. Jimenez was attacked while driving on a rural road in Santiago Amoltepec. The mayor had received death threats recently over a land dispute in the town, Milenio said.

Mayor, police officer murdered in southern Mexico

Mexico City, Mar 25 (EFE).- The mayor of the city of San Juan Mixtepec and a municipal police officer were ambushed and murdered over the weekend in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca, state officials said. Feliciano Martinez Bautista and officer Policarpo Remigio Rojas were driving through the city when they were attacked and killed around 2:30 a.m. Sunday, the Oaxaca state government said. The mayor was shot in the head and the officer was hit in the chest, officials said, adding that the vehicle rolled over after the attack.
