She was 92. The Central Committee of the ruling Communist Party reported Sunday "with deep sorrow" the death of Hernandez from complications related to diabetes.

Exiled former Cuban rebel who broke with Castro dead at 95

MIAMI (Reuters) - Huber Matos, a former Cuban revolutionary who fought alongside Fidel Castro, but later turned against him and was jailed before going into exile, died in Miami early Thursday aged 95. The cause of death was a "massive heart attack," according to a statement released by the family. The day before he died Matos spoke to supporters in Cuba, the statement said, adding that his last words were: "The struggle continues, long live a free Cuba."

During the meeting, which took place on Sunday afternoon, Castro and Betto spoke about the current international situation, according to a brief article published on the front page of Communist Party daily Granma and accompanied by a photograph showing the pair seated beside each other.

Castro holds court on sidelines of Havana summit

Fidel Castro, the 87-year-old father of the Cuban revolution, held court on the sidelines of a regional summit here this week, looking alert and well in his numerous meetings with foreign leaders. Besides his traditional political friends, the Maximum Leader also received UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon for the first time and young Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto. Ulises Estrada, a Cuban revolutionary who aided Ernesto Che Guevara's campaigns in Africa during the 1960s, has died, the official Cuban newspaper Granma said Tuesday. He was 79. Estrada, who died Sunday, held important posts in the Cuban Interior Ministry over the years, performing "sensitive missions" related to Latin American guerrilla movements in the 1960s, Granma said. He was the lover of the East German-born communist revolutionary known as Tania, nee Tamara Bunke, who was killed fighting alongside Guevara in Bolivia in 1967.

Journalist with Cuban official daily defects to U.S.

Miami, Jan 17 (EFE).- The erstwhile foreign editor for Cuban Communist Party daily Granma defected to the United States and is now in Miami. Aida Calviac Mora, 29, appeared Thursday night on Miami-based America TeVe television. In an interview with "El Espejo" host Juan Manuel Cao, she blasted Cuban official media and vented her frustration at never being allowed to come up with her own news coverage on "different, critical subjects." Recent photos on her Facebook profile show Calviac in Mexico, where she went for professional reasons, Web site Cafe Fuerte said.

The 87-year-old Fidel, whose last public appearance had been in April 2013, on Wednesday night attended the opening of the "Kcho estudio Romerillo, Laboratorio para el arte."
