Italy to investigate treatment of migrants on Lampedusa

Rome, Dec 18 (EFE).- Italian prosecutors on Wednesday opened an investigation of a migrant reception center on the island of Lampedusa after seeing video of new arrivals - some of them naked - standing in line outdoors to be washed down with disinfectant. The airing of the video on state television channel RAI2 provoked outrage from Italian and European Union officials. Lampedusa's mayor, Giusi Nicolini, likened the reception center to a "a concentration camp," while Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta vowed to hold the responsible parties accountable.

Protests mar Italy ceremony for shipwreck dead

Italy held a ceremony in honour of the victims of an asylum shipwreck on Monday, amid protests from survivors and relatives who slammed the government for keeping them away. The majority of the victims of the October 3 tragedy were from Eritrea, and dozens of their compatriots travelled to the Sicilian town of Agrigento from the Italian mainland to take part in the short, multifaith ceremony on the quayside. Wearing traditional costumes, they paid homage to the 366 people who drowned when their 20-metre boat caught fire, capsized and sank off the Italian island of Lampedusa.

Among the rescued migrants, 80 of them were spotted in Libyan waters by Italian port authority vessels and transferred to the Sicilian port of Pozzallo. Between the island of Malta and the Italian island of Lampedusa, Italy's navy and coast guard also rescued a boatload of 250 Eritreans and brought them ashore.

Italy to boost patrols in Mediterranean 'sea of death'

Italy on Monday was set to triple sea patrols amid a growing influx of asylum seekers making perilous crossings, as Prime Minister Enrico Letta said the Mediterranean should not be a "sea of death". The plan is for a large-scale deployment of ships, planes, helicopters and reportedly even Predator drones in a show of force also intended to put further pressure on European states to help.

Lampedusa migrant shipwreck toll rises to 359

Divers on Saturday found an additional 20 bodies off the Italian island of Lampedusa, Italian media reported, bringing the still provisional death toll from an October 3 shipwreck to 359. Only 155 of the about 545 migrants aboard the vessel, mainly from Eritrea, survived the disaster, the worst immigration tragedy for Italy in more than a decade. An Italian military ship, the Cassiopea, arrived Saturday at Lampedusa, Italy's southernmost island, to pick up 339 coffins bearing the first batch of victims, to transport them to Porto Empedocle, Sicily.

Rome, Oct 8 (EFE).- A Tunisian man is in custody in connection with the shipwreck that claimed the lives of at least 274 Eritrean and Somali migrants, an Italian prosecutor said Tuesday. Authorities were led to Ben Salam by testimony from other survivors, who said a "white man" was the boat's skipper, Di Natale said.
