Andrea Petkovic, who is coming back from a string of injuries in recent years, earned her first title in nearly three years Sunday with a straight-set win in the Family Circle Cup. Germany's Petkovic posted a 7-5, 6-2 win over rising star Jana Cepelova for her third WTA Tour crown and first since winning in Strasbourg in 2011. Her first title came fiver years ago in Bad Gastein. Petkovic clinched the win in the eighth game of the second set when Cepelova's forehand return sailed past the baseline.

Petkovic, on the comeback trail from a string of injuries, used her powerful forehand to collect her third WTA title in a match that lasted 79 minutes on the green clay in Charleston. "This is the biggest title I've ever won," the tall 26-year-old Bosnian-born German told ESPN.

Sixth-seeded Eugenie Bouchard notched one of the biggest wins of her career Friday, reaching the semi-finals of the WTA Family Circle Cup by toppling world number eight Jelena Jankovic. The 20-year-old Canadian outlasted former world number one Jankovic 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 in a rematch from last year's quarter-finals at this green claycourt event. Jankovic won that one, but has now lost two out of three matches against rising star Bouchard. "I knew in the second set my game wasn't where I wanted it to be," Bouchard said.

(Reuters) - Second-seeded Serbian Jelena Jankovic and third seed Sara Errani of Italy were both bundled out of the Family Circle Cup in Charleston on Friday in gripping quarter-final upsets. Rising Canadian star Eugenie Bouchard, a semi-finalist at the Australian Open in January, continued her rousing run at the tournament as she ousted Jankovic 6-3 4-6 6-3 after a match lasting just over two hours.

Petkovic dances way into Miami second round

By Steve Keating MIAMI (Reuters) - Andrea Petkovic has not had much reason to dance this season but the effervescent German flashed some of her moves after advancing to the second round of the Sony Open on Wednesday with a 6-3 6-4 win over Spain's Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor. Ranked in the top 10 at the end of 2011 with two titles on her resume and regarded as one of the WTA Tour's rising stars, Petkovic had plenty of reason and occasions to kick up her heels.

Tennis: Serena tested in season opener

World number one Serena Williams opened her 2014 season with a hard-fought 6-4, 6-4 win over Germany's Andrea Petkovic in the second round of the Brisbane International on Tuesday. Williams, who was given a bye in the first round, was pushed hard by the unseeded Petkovic in front of a packed crowd at Pat Rafter Arena. The American mixed the good with the bad, making 36 unforced errors but hitting 35 winners in the 98-minute encounter.
