Malaysia kidnappers telephone Chinese victim's family

Kidnappers holding a Chinese tourist who was abducted from a resort on Malaysia's Borneo island have made a phone call to her family in China, a senior security official said Sunday. He said the gunmen have communicated with the family of Gao Huayuan, 29, whom Philippine security forces believe is being held in Jolo island in the southern Philippines. "They have made telephone contact with her family," Mohammad Mentek, director-general of the security command in the east of Malaysia's Sabah state, told AFP.

A Taiwanese tourist whose husband was killed by gunmen in a kidnapping at a Malaysian island resort returned to Taiwan on Saturday after she was rescued in the southern Philippines. Television footage showed Chang An-wei, 58, dressed in a loose T-shirt and wearing sunglasses, walking to a minibus parked at an airport near Taipei after she arrived in the early afternoon, waving briefly to the media and giving a thumbs-up sign. Local media said she is expected to go to a hospital in Taipei for medical check-ups later Saturday.

A Taiwanese tourist whose husband was reported killed by gunmen in a kidnapping at a Malaysian island resort has been found alive in the southern Philippines, local military said Friday. Chang An Wei, 58, also known as Evelyn Chang, was found by Philippine marines at a village near Talipao, a town on the remote island of Jolo where Abu Sayyaf Islamic militants are known to operate, they said. Five fishermen slain in Philippine sea attack

Gunmen aboard a speedboat shot dead five members of a fishing crew in a mysterious attack in the seas of the southern Philippines, the coast guard said Saturday. The five were part of a fishing fleet off the troubled southern islands of Sulu when the gunmen attacked them on Friday, said coast guard spokesman Lieutenant Jomark Angue. Even as the five leapt overboard, the gunmen riddled them with bullets, then sped off. Only three of the bodies were recovered, he said.

The husband of a town mayor was killed and a bomb attack injured four people in separate incidents of violence linked to Philippine mid-term elections next week, police said Monday. The attacks came as national police went on heightened alert for fear of more violence before the May 13 vote. Gunmen shot dead John Apura in an ambush as he was campaigning for his wife on the central island of Panay, provincial police chief Chief Superintendent Agrimero Cruz said in a statement. An aide was also killed while another was wounded in the attack, he said.

PCG transports 128 Filipinos displaced in Sabah row

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) on Saturday announced that one of its ships have transported 128 Filipinos displaced by the fighting between followers of Sulu Sultan Jamalul Kiram III and Malaysian security forces, to safe havens in Taganak, Tawi-Tawi.A newly born child was among the 128 people assisted by the PCG. "Officials and crew members of PCG search and rescue vessel BRP Nueva Vizcaya (SARV-3502) ... went to Taganak, Tawi-Tawi to transport (the) returnees," it said.The PCG said the 128 returnees included 58 adults and 70 children.
