Remnants of WWII Normandy harbour wear away at sea

Looking out at the Channel from France's Lower Normandy beaches, there is little reminder today of the harbour built after the D-Day landings of tens of thousands of Allied soldiers that took the Germans by surprise in 1944. Just a handful of large concrete blocks remain of a engineering feat by the Allies that became a crucial logistical support leading to their victory in Normandy.

Eiffel Tower staircase to go under hammer in Paris

A piece of Parisian history will go under the hammer next week with the sale of a 15-step section of the Eiffel Tower's original spiral staircase. The iron steps, which once connected the tower's second and third levels, will be auctioned on Monday as part of a sale of Art Deco furniture by auction house Artcurial in the French capital. Expected to fetch between $27,00 and $40,000, they stand around three and a half metres high (12 feet) and weigh 750 kilogrammes (1,650 pounds).

New York's Freedom Tower, tallest building in the Americas

New York, Nov 12 (EFE).- The Freedom Tower in New York is the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere at 542 meters (1,777 feet), surpassing Chicago's Willis Tower, the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat said Tuesday. The New York edifice, whose official name is One World Trade Center, takes the title as tallest after including the spire installed this year, which raises it from 417 meters (1,367 feet) to 542 meters (1,777 feet), leaving the 442 meters (1,449 feet) of the Chicago skyscraper behind.

New World Trade Center deemed tallest US skyscraper

Citing its role as a "symbol of resurgence," a panel declared Tuesday that New York's One World Trade Center will be the tallest US skyscraper once it is completed, topping the former Sears Tower in Chicago. Architects at the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat agreed that the center's 124.4 meter (408 foot) antenna was a permanent architectural feature of the building and should be counted in determining its height.

Tallest US skyscraper? Experts decide

Which is the tallest skyscraper in the United States? Experts will decide Tuesday between New York's World Trade Center and the former Sears Tower in Chicago. Architects at the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat will announce their decision at simultaneous press conferences in the two cities, the CTBUH said on its site. The CTBUH's Height Committee must decide whether the antenna on top of the new World Trade Center counts in determining the building's height.

Company to replace support beams used in building $1.4-billion Windsor parkway

TORONTO - Hundreds of support beams used in the construction of one of Canada's largest infrastructure projects will be replaced after an expert panel questioned their safety and durability. Windsor Essex Mobility Group, which is responsible for the $1.4-billion Windsor parkway, said 508 of the 562 concrete girders identified by the panel will be replaced, which will delay the project. The panel found that tack welding was used in assembling the girders, which violates federal code. It also makes steel brittle and susceptible to early corrosion, it said.

Software being developed in Spain to improve building safety in quakes

Alicante, Spain, Apr 28 (EFE).- A Spanish software company is developing a computer tool that will help improve building safety in earthquakes and that will be able to be used in construction projects by companies located in seismic zones. The new aspect of this software, which is geared toward architects, engineers and construction firms, is that it is capable of calculating the effect that the facades, the partitions and the walls - which have a tendency to develop cracks in a quake - will have on the overall structure of a building.
