US wants OSCE observers in Ukraine 'immediately'

The OSCE should send observers to Ukraine "immediately", the US envoy said as the pan-European organisation on Monday discussed sending such a mission at a special meeting in Vienna. Swiss President Didier Burkhalter, holder of who the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe's rotating presidency, on Monday also urged Ukraine to invite the body to send observers. "We call today for OSCE observers to be sent immediately to Ukraine," US ambassador Daniel Baer said in a speech, the text of which was released on Monday.

Swiss trying to convene OSCE contact group on Ukraine

GENEVA (Reuters) - Switzerland, which chairs the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), said on Monday it is trying to convene an international contact group on Ukraine and urged all players to help defuse the crisis. Foreign Minister Didier Burkhalter, who holds the rotating presidency of Europe's main human rights and democracy watchdog, said that the OSCE contact group would support Ukraine during its period of transition and coordinate international aid.
