UNHCR faults Cyprus on refugee protection

The UN refugee agency on Wednesday accused EU member Cyprus of failing to provide effective protection for displaced foreigners seeking sanctuary on the island. A new law on refugees, published Tuesday, "curtailed essential rights of forcibly displaced people who have sought sanctuary," said the local office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. "We are disappointed that Cyprus has lowered down its standards when it comes to the protection of persons fleeing war and generalised violence," said Damtew Dessalegne, the UNHCR representative in Cyprus.

Shipwreck on Africa's Lake Albert claims 98 lives

At least 98 people died when a boat capsized on Lake Albert, which lies between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees said Monday. "Based on information UNHCR has received so far from the authorities and refugees, 41 people were rescued and 98 bodies recovered" after Saturday's disaster, the refugee agency said in a statement. "As many as 250 people may have been aboard the boat," added the UNHCR, which reported that the vessel had been transporting Congolese refugees returning to their homeland from Uganda.

The Government of Japan has provided US$ 6 million in support of the UNHCR’s refugee programmes in Pakistan.The Japanese funds will support UNHCR’s commitment to provide primary school education to around 75,000 refugee children in different refugee villages.The funding will also bolster UNHCR’s efforts in providing assistance to Afghan refugees in the areas of primary health care, provision of legal services, specialized services for children at risk, and survivors of sexual and gender-based violence.
