French foie gras - made in China to dodge import ban

The duck liver delicacy did not make it onto a list of French foods newly approved by Chinese import authorities this week, despite years of lobbying. Manufacturer Rougie has already taken a more direct route to market.

Outcry forces foie gras industry to swallow changes

Long accused of torture by animal-rights activists, French foie gras producers are admitting they may have gone too far and vowing changes to how ducks and geese are reared and their livers fattened. They are also promising a new spirit of openness and transparency about the controversial practice of gavage -- the force-feeding of animals by passing plastic tubes through their throats directly into their stomachs. "Maybe we did go a little too far," said Marie Pierre Pe of CIFOG, an industry group representing French foie gras producers.

Butterball mystery: Few details on why turkeys didn't fatten up

NEW YORK, N.Y. - Butterball apparently has big fat mystery on its hands: The company says it doesn't know why some of its turkeys wouldn't plump up in time for Thanksgiving this year. CEO Rod Brenneman says in an interview with the AP that it's the first time it happened and that the company is investigating what went wrong. Butterball had announced last week that it will have a limited supply of large, fresh turkeys that are 16 pounds or heavier for the holidays.

Appeals court upholds California ban on foie gras

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - California can continue to ban the sale of foie gras, a federal appeals court ruled on Friday, in a setback for producers of the delicacy who have sought to ship it to the state. The unanimous ruling by a three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upholds an earlier ruling by a district court judge. California's ban on the food went into effect in July 2012.

KFC to test upmarket restaurant with only boneless chicken, no colonel

NEW YORK, N.Y. - KFC is tossing out the bones and the quaint image of founder Col. Harland Sanders as it gets ready to test a slightly more upmarket restaurant. The fried chicken chain says it's opening a location called "KFC eleven" early next month near its headquarters in Louisville, Ky., that will serve flatbreads with toppings, rice bowls, salads and only boneless pieces of its Original Recipe chicken.

The U.S.-listed firm, the world's largest restaurant company by number of outlets, said in a filing Wednesday that the latest deadly avian flu outbreak would have a "significant, negative impact" on sales at KFC stores in China in April.
