Former Estonian security official detained for Russia spying

Security police in Estonia said a former official was on Friday remanded into custody for high treason after he confessed to spying for Russia. Now-retired Vladimir Veitman -- the latest in a recent string of Estonians revealed as having spied for Russia -- had worked for the security police for decades after an earlier posting in the KGB. "He was recruited to spy for Russia later, not immediately after he got the job at the Estonian security police," director Arnold Sinisalu told reporters.

Russia expels Estonian diplomat

Estonia's foreign ministry said Wednesday Russia had expelled its St. Petersburg consul, in what Tallinn called a tit-for-tit response to an unspecified move by the Baltic nation. Consul Franek Persidski "is already in Estonia", foreign ministry spokeswoman Minna-Liina Lind told AFP. "It is a counteraction by Russia to a similar step taken earlier by Estonia," she added without providing details.
