Malaysian sex bloggers charged with sedition for eating pork during Ramadan

A Malaysian couple known for a sexually explicit blog were charged Thursday with sedition after they caused outrage by posting a Ramadan greeting on Facebook which showed them eating pork. Alvin Tan, 25, and Vivian Lee, 24, pleaded not guilty to publishing or distributing a "seditious publication" and two other charges in a Kuala Lumpur district court in Muslim-majority Malaysia, a court official said. They were denied bail and so will be jailed pending trial, she said. The next court date has been set for August 23.

Singapore cartoonist arrested for sedition

A Singaporean cartoonist has been arrested for alleged sedition over a satirical comic strip on his Facebook page that appeared to accuse the government of racism, police and his lawyer said Wednesday. Leslie Chew, 37, was released on bail following his arrest Friday, two days after a complaint was filed about his cartoon strip that lampooned the government for being "racist" toward minority Malays, his lawyer Choo Zheng Xi told AFP. The strip was posted on Chew's "Demon-cratic Singapore" Facebook page on March 27.
