San Francisco Giants - TeamReport

MLB Team Report - San Francisco Giants - INSIDE PITCH Just one team in history finished in last place a year after winning a World Series. That was the 1998 Marlins, who dumped so many of their best players that they lost 108 games a year after winning it all in 1997. The Giants don't want to be next.

Arizona Diamondbacks - PlayerWatch

1B Paul Goldschmidt, whose day off Wednesday broke a streak of 47 consecutive starts, has had great success against Giants RHP Tim Lincecum. Goldschmidt, who hit his first career homer off Lincecum in August 2010, is 9-for-17 (.529) with five homers and 11 RBIs in the matchup. Goldschmidt, who leads the NL with 104 RBIs, has been particularly good against left-handers this season. He leads the league with a .623 slugging percentage against lefties and is tied with Atlanta's Justin Upton for the lead with 10 homers.

1B Brandon Belt was mentioned by manager Bruce Bochy as someone who might get a shot in left field as the club plays out the string of a losing season. Why? Because the Giants don't have anything close to a solid left field option at this point heading into next season. Belt certainly has the bat to be a corner outfielder -- at least the one he's been swinging. Belt had a double in four plate appearances in Sunday's 4-0 win over the Pirates, giving him a .341 average in August.

MLB Team Report - San Francisco Giants - INSIDE PITCH Tim Lincecum could be winding down one of the most storied careers in Giants history -- and he's not close to retiring. Lincecum will be a free agent after the season, and he could be wearing another uniform in 2014. A two-time Cy Young Award winner, two-time World Series champion, owner of a no-hitter and ace for much of his time in orange and black, Lincecum probably has two more home games before diving into the open market.

Giants 6, Pirates 3

Giants 6, Pirates 3: Pablo Sandoval drove in one of San Francisco's four first-inning runs and added an RBI single in the sixth as the host Giants halted a three-game skid. Buster Posey collected three hits and plated a run while Gregor Blanco added two hits and an RBI for San Francisco, which scored fewer than four runs in four of its previous five games.

INF Nick Noonan likely will get significant playing time at second base in September when the Giants are expected to significantly limit 2B Marco Scutaro's activity. Noonan got two at-bats as a late-inning replacement for Scutaro in a blowout loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday night and didn't take advantage, going 0-for-2. Friday he got the bad news: The Giants need immediate help in the bullpen more than a .209-hitting backup infielder, so Noonan was sent back to Triple-A Fresno. He's expected to be recalled Sept. 1 when rosters expand.

Preview: Pirates at Giants

The Pittsburgh Pirates look to continue their success on their seven-game road trip when they visit the San Francisco Giants for the third contest of their four-game series Saturday. Clint Barmes belted a three-run homer in the seventh inning Friday as Pittsburgh posted a 3-1 triumph and maintained its one-game lead over the St. Louis Cardinals in the National League Central. The Pirates improved to 4-1 on their trek following a stretch during which they lost seven of nine contests.

MLB Team Report - San Francisco Giants - INSIDE PITCH The Giants are still trying to figure out what to do in left field. In fact, they'll continue laboring over the subject into the offseason. It'll be one of the team's biggest needs in 2014. Manager Bruce Bochy said he'll be using several players in left field in the season's final weeks. Brett Pill, a first baseman by trade who had an impressive run-producing season in Triple-A, made his first start of the season in left on Thursday.
