Cannes film festival hit by second jewelry theft

CANNES (Reuters) - The Cannes film festival was hit by a second jewelry heist on Thursday after a diamond necklace worth 2 million euros ($2.6 million) disappeared during a star-studded party, according to upmarket jeweler De Grisogono. Fawaz Gruosi, the founder of the Swiss firm, said the necklace was part of the company's 20th anniversary collection paraded by 20 models at the glitzy event at the Hotel Du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes outside Cannes on Tuesday night. Sharon Stone and Paris Hilton were among the guests.

Police hunting three suspects in Cannes jewellery heist

French police said Tuesday they were hunting three men suspected of being behind the spectacular theft last week of a million euros ($1.4 million) worth of jewellery at the Cannes Film Festival. Police in Nice said the three suspects are believed to have broken into the hotel room occupied by an American employee of Swiss jewellery-maker Chopard in the early hours of Friday. "We presume it was people specialised in this kind of theft," Philippe Frizon of Nice police, who are running the investigation, told AFP.

Jewellery worth more than $1 million due to be loaned to stars at the Cannes Film Festival was stolen from a local hotel in a pre-dawn heist on Friday but the coveted Palme d'Or trophy was safe, officials said. In a scenario itself worthy of a movie, thieves entered the hotel room of an American woman employee of Swiss bijoutier Chopard and ripped out the strongbox in the wardrobe, according to police reports. They then made off with the safe and the jewels inside.

Jewellery worth $1.4 million due to be loaned to stars at the Cannes Film Festival was stolen from a local hotel in a pre-dawn heist on Friday but the coveted Palme d'Or trophy was safe, officials said. The robbery took place in the hotel room of an American woman employee of Swiss bijoutier Chopard as she was out for the evening, police said. A strongbox containing jewels was ripped out of the wardrobe and carried off, they said. The public prosecutor for the Cannes region, Jean-Michel Cailliau, said the loss was estimated at $1.4 million dollars (one million euro).
