Judge names monitor to oversee Arizona sheriff in profiling case

By David Schwartz PHOENIX (Reuters) - A veteran lawman who oversees embattled police departments in Detroit and Oakland was appointed on Friday to monitor the operations of a controversial Arizona sheriff whose deputies had racially profiled Latino drivers. Robert Warshaw, a former police chief in New York and North Carolina, was appointed by a federal judge to enforce a sweeping court order against Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, a prominent but divisive figure in the national debate on immigration reform.

Phoenix, Oct 2 (EFEUSA).- A U.S. federal judge on Wednesday placed heavy restrictions on the Sheriff's Office in Maricopa County, Arizona, including placing an independent observer there to prevent racial profiling on the part of its personnel. In his decision, Judge Murray Snow said that the office of Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who has gained wide attention for his operations against immigrants, has three months to hire a bilingual sheriff to serve as a liaison with the community.
