Kamakura Mayor Takashi Matsuo and Kanagawa Gov. Yuji Kuroiwa said Monday they have asked the Agency for Cultural Affairs to drop its recommendation to UNESCO to put the ancient city in Kanagawa Prefecture, near Tokyo, on the World Heritage list.
In response, the agency has started procedures to cancel the recommendation.
Kamakura, located about 50 kilometers southwest of Tokyo, was the seat of a samurai government from the late 12th to 14th centuries that nurtured Japanese culture including the tea ceremony and Zen rituals.
