Magnotta case: judge rules that Crown can go to Europe to get evidence

MONTREAL - A Quebec judge presiding over the case of alleged killer Luka Rocco Magnotta has granted an order that evidence be collected in France and Germany. Superior Court Justice Guy Cournoyer ruled today in favour of a Crown motion presented Thursday. Magnotta's trial in the May 2012 death of Concordia University student Jun Lin is scheduled to take place this coming September. Magnotta left Canada after the alleged murder and went to France and then Germany, where he was arrested in June 2012.

Judge finds no evidence of eavesdropping on Guantanamo meetings

Therefore, the judge ruled, there is no need to issue an order prohibiting future monitoring of attorney-client meetings.

China issues guidelines to prevent wrong court judgements

China for the first time has issued guidelines aimed at preventing wrongful or unjust court judgements in response to high-profile judicial scandals, state media reported Tuesday. The guidelines were released by the Commission for Political and Legal Affairs, part of the Communist Party's Central Committee, the official Xinhua news agency reported. It said it was the first time such guidelines had been issued. They largely reiterated existing principles, including preventing punishment in cases where guilt cannot be absolutely established.
