Feds ask National Energy Board, Competition Bureau, to study propane price jumps

OTTAWA - The federal government is calling for an investigation of a "fairly serious" propane supply crisis that has seen prices for the fuel nearly double since the fall. Ontario's energy minister welcomed Thursday's announcement but critics say the probe will do little to help farmers and other rural residents cope with the skyrocketing cost of keeping their homes, livestock and businesses warm this winter.

Propane shortage, higher prices causing problems for suppliers, customers in extreme cold

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Supply problems in several states where propane is a crucial heating source have prompted governors and other officials to take action against vendors, investigate claims of price gouging and increase aid to low-income customers. The propane drain coincides with extreme cold temperatures in several Midwestern and Southern states where residents and business owners are struggling to keep heating tanks filled due to increased costs or supply cut-offs.

U.S. propane shortage hits millions during brutal freeze

By Sabina Zawadzki and Edward McAllister NEW YORK (Reuters) - Millions of Americans are feeling the pinch of a propane shortage this week as brutal cold exposes the supply vulnerabilities of a fuel that heats homes, schools and businesses across wide swathes of the United States. Prices of the fuel, a liquefied petroleum gas, have rocketed to all-time highs in Midwestern states, distributors are rationing supplies, and some schools have shut due to a lack of the fuel during this year's second bout of Arctic weather.

Continuing bitter cold extends propane shortage, causes a spike in prices

OTTAWA - A shortage of propane in parts of Central Canada has suppliers scrambling to find extra fuel and rural consumers fuming about skyrocketing prices. The Canadian Propane Association insists there is no supply shortage in Canada. But the latest statistics from the National Energy Board show propane inventories were nearly 30 per cent lower across the country in January compared with the same month last year. And one of the country's biggest suppliers, Superior Propane, predicted Thursday that prices will likely remain high until May.

CN to do aerial surveillance of derailment to determine source of fire

PLASTER ROCK, N.B. - Officials with CN will do an aerial surveillance of a train carrying propane and crude oil that derailed in northwestern New Brunswick to try to determine the source and extent of an ongoing fire. CN spokesman Jim Feeny says crews will use a helicopter to help identify if the freight train is on fire in the community of Wapske, near Plaster Rock. He says initial indications are that 15 cars and one locomotive derailed, though the train consisted of 122 cars and four locomotives.

STONY PLAIN, Alta. - Linda Jean McNall and her mother had lived most of their lives together, caring for each other, so when the senior's health worsened, the pair struck a suicide pact. They sold everything they owned, wrote letters to their creditors and gave up their apartment in Sierra Vista, Ariz. Then they drove north to Alberta. Court heard Tuesday that the women decided to end their lives in a tent, pitched in a secluded mountain area near Rock Lake, about 350 kilometres west of Edmonton.
